What to expect
You might think of a psychiatric evaluation as “pre-therapy.” During a psychiatric evaluation, your doctor will sit down and talk with you about your symptoms, concerns, and overall health.
Psychiatric services at Breakaway start with a thorough psychiatric diagnostic assessment to enable the clinician to reach an accurate diagnosis, make appropriate treatment recommendations, and establish with the patient the most effective and patient-centered treatment plan.
After the initial assessment, follow-up visits focus on individualized medication evaluation and management, along with other therapeutic interventions as clinically appropriate. Ongoing care is done in close collaboration with any other mental or physical health care providers.
From dr. Wichmans Desk
“Struggling with Depression, Anxiety, and mental illness as a whole can be very scary and perplexing for patients. The art of psychiatry is meeting the patient where they are at. It is different for each and every patient.
What I value the most is the personal connection, listening to their journey, and instilling hope that they will get better…and they will. I feel strongly that by partnering with patients to teach them about the disease process and have them understand why we are using the meds and treatment modalities (including TMS) that we use is key. Having them take an active role in their treatment and recovery is paramount to achieving the great outcomes we all desire.
I see myself as the Head Coach of the treatment team with the patient being a trusted Assistant Coach that can learn under my guidance to become their own Head Coach of their life…..that’s when everyone wins, especially the patient! I feel honored every day that individuals allow me into their lives at some of their darkest moments, and together we can work to get the win and get their lives back! I am blessed to do what I do every day, and these wins are what get me out of bed every morning.”

FAQs Regarding Psychiatric Visits
Psychiatrists treat individuals in distress because of various difficulties, including depression, anxiety, bipolar disorder, psychosis, and some types of behavioral problems, such as those involving self-destructive or violent impulses. A number of emotional and mental difficulties are influenced by physical conditions; as a physician, a psychiatrist is in a position to take account of such conditions and coordinate overall care.
Breakaway’s Psychiatry staff conduct assessments to determine the best treatment plan and can prescribe medication for psychiatric illnesses and other situations requiring medication intervention. Psychotropic medications are useful and appropriate for some conditions, such as severe depression, bipolar disorder, and psychosis. However, they are not necessary in every case. Psychiatrists are trained to deal with the psychological and interpersonal aspects of difficulties, as well as prescription of medication.
No. Psychiatrists evaluate and treat individuals with a wide range of difficulties. This is true for those who seek out treatment themselves and those who are referred by others.
Currently Breakaway is only treating patients who are adults (18+ years old). Your insurance may also affect your eligibility for treatment depending on your plan and current provider.
